Visiting History

This morning provided overcast skies and the forecast was for rain all day so things did not look to good for a day out sightseeing. But Jim & Mel had offered me a day out so off we went. As soon as we got into the car it started drizzling rain and all day long we had showers of rain but it was only light rain so it did not interfere with our trip.

We headed south out of Cliffs End went around Dover and passed through Folkestone. We then continued along the coastline through Dymchurch, which is a village that caters for families holidaying along the coast. It is full of games arcades and children’s rides and St Mary’s Bay and past a military artillery training area on the coastline. There were troops there training there as we went past.

We then passed inland through a lot of sheep farms and grazing areas to Rye.
Rye is a very old town quite close to Hastings of 1066 fame. Rye has a very nice church called the Church of St Mary the Virgin, standing on the top of the town hill it has a tower you can walk up and view the whole area. It also has a large clock in the tower that dates back to 1561. The old area of the town has roads which are quite narrow and some are cobble stoned.
There is an old inn called the Mermaid which dates back to the 1500’s.
I stopped at a lolly shop and bought some sherbet lemon which is my mother’s favourite sweet. We had some lunch in a little cafe and then travelled on to Winchelsea, a small village where Mel and Jim had taken my parents on one of their visits to Ramsgate.

We then started home travelling along some different roads, travelling some narrow lanes with high hedges along them and in some places the trees covered the road and it was like you were driving through a tunnel.

Along the way we stopped at a village called Wingham which had a thatched roof cottage and a small river running through it.

All in all we had a very good day out that was not spoiled by the overcast showery English summer day.

Played on those ranges a few times, I see your postal bill is rising quite quickly. Went by your house today on one of my runs everything looks ok it's still standing.

skye - Thanks. Havn't posted anything yet. Going to gate a large crate and send from London before I leave. Hope the car is still in one piece!
