London Day 1

In an effort to catch up after missing a day flying I have put up two posts at the same time.

After getting to bed at around midnight London Time I only slept about 5 hours and then got up and read my book for about an hour and a half until I finished it. It is a book called ‘By The Balls’ by Les Murray. Les is the presenter of the SBS TV Football in Australia and is commonly known as Mr Soccer. It is a story of his life from a being a Hungarian refugee as a child and growing up in Australia to becoming known as a worldwide authority on football. It is a very good book although it is a story on his life it also is a great insight into how the soccer has progressed in Australia from the 1960’s until today.

I went out with Stewart at 7.30 and we took the car to the garage to get the mechanics to check out the noise in the rear of the car from last night. Stewart is driving this car for a wedding party this afternoon and we left the car at the garage and walked down the road to the Sainsbury’s store which is a supermarket chain in the U.K. This store was huge it is like a combined Woolworths supermarket and a Big W department store in one. We checked out the beer section and found a huge selection of both British and Imported beers. I will get a photo and put it on line soon. I also checked out the Pringles chips section and there are 16 different tubes on sale, not all different varieties but of varying sizes and promotions. I did not get any as Stewart said we will go back later on another day when we have the car with us.

Back to the garage and the mechanic had taken off the rear tyre and found two large stones which fell out when he took the tyre off. That had been causing the noise. So it was not a huge problem and we were on our way.

Stewart took me into a business estate and we saw Thames Television studios and the building they use to film the TV show The Bill. It is actually an old police station and they built the studio around it. It looked as though they were filming a scene in the entry foyer to the police station when we drove past.

We then went back home as Stewart prepared for the car for the Wedding Hire he had later. As Stewart left for the wedding he dropped me off at the shops at North Cheam where I was able to go to the Post Office and post the security swipe card back to Branka and Oli in Singapore.
The day was quite warm with mainly clear skies and just a few clouds.

It was now lunch time so I went into Wetherspoons which is one of a chain of pubs in the U.K. I had my first traditional English meal of the trip Bangers & Mash. It was quite good. I was able to read the daily paper and catch up with some of the British news. They share the same problems as Australia with exploding costs in petrol and food. The pub also has free Wi-Fi so it might be handy some day in the next few weeks.

From there I went into a different Sainsbury’s to check what they had and bought some lollies plus two different types of Diet Coke Plus bottles. Plus with Vitamins and Plus with Antioxidant. They are in a smaller bottle (350ml) . The Vitamins include B3, B12 and C. The Antioxidants include Green Tea and Vitamin C.

I then walked home about a mile and a half. Stopping on the way at the Lord Nelson pub for a cool drink and picking up some beer coasters.

At home I watched some Darts on Sky Channel and a few game shows until Stewart came home and I was able to get onto the computer and update the blog placing up the second day in Singapore and putting a lot of photos onto the Flickr page as well as answer emails.
I had an early night and will be up in the morning to watch the Wallabies play the All Blacks which starts at about 8.30am London time.
